IWISA No. 1 launches a streetwear competition for young designers

Since 1956, IWISA No.1 has been more than just a trusted pantry essential. It has stood for nourishment, community and comfort in homes across South Africa.

Now, the iconic maize brand is stepping into a bold new space with a competition that puts creativity, youth and fashion at the centre. Say hello to the IWISA No.1 Fills Bold Designer Search, a national design competition built to empower young visionaries.

This is more than just a campaign. It’s a meaningful invitation to designers aged 18 to 35 to co-create IWISA No.1’s first-ever fashion capsule. Through this project, young creatives are given the opportunity to tell their stories through fashion, using design as a tool for empowerment and identity.

What does “Fills Bold” really mean?

“Fills Bold” is more than a catchy slogan. It takes IWISA No.1’s heritage of nourishment and reinterprets it for the now. This time, it’s not just about food. It’s about filling space, owning your narrative and expressing your voice through style.

Young designers are encouraged to lean into their roots, remix tradition and reflect their world in the clothes they create. Whether through colour, shape or message, this is a collection that should feel real, relevant and proudly local.

“This isn’t just about creating clothes,” adds Nhlapo. “It’s about unlocking potential, telling real stories and helping young people take their place in the world with confidence.”

Why fashion, and why now?

Fashion is about more than trends. It is identity, self-expression and storytelling. Just as meals bring families together, clothing helps us define who we are. For IWISA No.1, launching an apparel range is a natural next step in a long history of connecting with everyday South Africans.

The Fills Bold Designer Search becomes a new kind of platform. It allows young creatives to reimagine a brand they grew up with, and to reflect their dreams, voices and values in a tangible, wearable way.

The Glamour spotlight

One of the most exciting parts of the campaign is IWISA No.1’s partnership with Glamour South Africa. Finalists won’t just receive cash prizes and a brand-new MacBook Pro. Their designs will also be professionally styled, shot and featured in Glamour’s editorial spreads. This gives young designers an incredible opportunity to gain exposure and be seen by national audiences and key players in the industry.

This is more than a fashion feature. It is a confidence boost, a creative launchpad and a moment of celebration for young people ready to take up space in the fashion world.

Enter the Fills Bold Competition

With entries closing on 13 July 2025, young designers are encouraged to take action.

Submissions can be made online via the Iwisa No.1 entry portal, with design templates and guidelines available Here.

For the finalists, it’s a chance to be seen by some of the country’s top creative voices and contributors including David Tshabalala, Clinton Myeni and Anet Norval-Fariña, each of whom has carved their own path through bold, culture-rooted storytelling.

For the non-designers among us, the campaign offers something too: a reminder that fashion is deeply personal and powerful, especially when it’s made by and for those whose time is now.

As Iwisa No.1 proves through this campaign, belonging is not just about sitting at the table but rather about building the table together. In July 2025, that table is filled bold.
