Warm up with a hearty beef sishebo

Whether you're cooking for the family or just trying to keep the cold at bay, beef sishebo is a winter essential.

This classic South African stew is the kind of dish that turns an ordinary evening into something special. With tender beef, warming spices, and the added heartiness of potatoes and mixed veg, it’s a one-pot wonder that brings everyone to the table. Recipe compliments of Harvestime.

 

 

Prep time: 5 minutes | Cooking time: 90 minutes | Serves: 4 – 6

 

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Harvestime Mix Veg
  • 1 kg Beef for stewing
  • 2 teaspoons oil
  • 1 large onion diced
  • 2 teaspoons garlic and ginger paste
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 tablespoons curry powder of choice
  • Mixed herbs
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 3 large potatoes cubed
  • 3 cups beef stock
  • Salt and pepper

 

 

 

Method

  1. Add oil to a large pot on medium heat and add the onions, fry until translucent.
  2. Add the garlic and ginger and the bay leaves and fry for a further minute.
  3. Add the spices and mixed herbs and mix well and then add the beef – add a dash of water and allow the beef to fry with the spices for 5 minute.s
  4. Now add the tomato paste and stock and allow to simmer for about 45 minutes until the meat is beginning to soften.
  5. Add in the chopped potatoes and cook for 20 minutes before adding in the frozen veggies.
  6. Add more water or stock if needed, cook for 10 minutes and it’s done when the meat is tender.
  7. Adjust seasoning.
  8. Serve with rice or pap.
