Vincent Kipkorir aims for a fast time at the Absa Run Your City 10km in Durban

Kenyan athlete Vincent Kipkorir heads into the Absa Run Your City 10km in Durban as the fastest in the field, and he is targeting a sub-27-minute finish.

The highly anticipated race gets underway at 8 am, starting on Masabalala Yengwa Avenue and concluding at the Durban Beach Front, with over 10,000 runners having snapped up all available entries.

Kipkorir, who recently posted a personal best of 27:08 to finish fifth at the Adizero Road to Records event in Germany two weeks ago, is the clear favourite to claim the R30,000 winner’s prize.

He is targeting a sub-26:30 finish, confident that it’s possible on a coastal course with ideal weather conditions. “I’m feeling good heading into the Durban race this weekend,” he told SABC Sport.

“I’ve focused on staying injury-free and keeping up my strong form. My goal in KwaZulu-Natal is to run a fast time—hopefully a personal best, if conditions allow for it. I’m aiming to go under 27 minutes, and possibly even hit 26:30.

“There’s a lot of talent here, with a strong field of runners, and the event keeps growing, so credit must go to the organisers, Stillwater Sports and Absa,” he said.

Kipkorir is no stranger to the Run Your City series, having finished second at the Gqeberha leg in April with a time of 27:48, just behind South Africa’s Adriaan Wildschutt.

A former winner of the Durban 10km, Kipkorir now has his sights set on breaking the South African all-comers record of 27:16 by clocking the fastest time ever recorded on local soil.

“I’m in peak condition and just waiting for race day,” he told the national broadcaster. “If my body responds well, everything will go according to plan. I’m expecting a fast race from start to finish.”
