SABC Sport understands that German Bundesliga second division outfit Hannover 96 are the leading favourites to sign defender Ime Okon on a free transfer from SuperSport United next month.
The public broadcaster confirmed on Monday night on Soccer Zone that the centre back would not be entertaining any local overs following links to both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs.
Okon rose to prominence two seasons ago when coach Gavin Hunt gave him his big break in the first team and the youngster has never looked back since, and when it emerged his contract with SuperSport United was soon to run down the two Soweto giants pushed to get him on board.
But Okon and his camp felt the 21-year-old, who was recently in the Bafana Bafana squad during the COSAFA Cup, would be better suited playing abroad for his growth as well as more opportunities.
Okon went on trial to Dynamo Kyiv six months ago while the Ukraine Premier League side were in Turkey for a mid-season break and it is believed he impressed only for the deal not to go through.
SuperSport CEO Stan Matthews had been quoted in the media confirming the player’s imminent transfer to an unnamed team in Europe, but this supposed move was never finalised at the time.
Hannover 96 have now made their intentions clear by entering into formal talks with Okon with information gathered suggested there will be an offer tabled in the coming days – pending the outcome of interest elsewhere.
The player has previously also attracted interest from Denmark, but SABC Sport understands that the Germans are hot favourites.
Attempts to get a comment from agent Glyn Binkin were unsuccessful, but the representative had in the past confirmed to the public broadcaster that Okon would be a free agent come 1 July.
