Senegal and Nigeria impress with big wins in Women's Africa Cup of Nations openers
Senegal 4-0 DR Congo
Senegal got their Women's Africa Cup of Nations campaign off to a great start with a comprehensive 4-0 victory over the DR Congo at Stade El Bachir in Morocco on Sunday.
Mama Diop opened the scoring after just five minutes and Nguenar Ndiaye added a second with just 13 minutes on the clock.
Diop was on target again on 22 minutes as Senegal took complete control of the tie.
Ndiaye also bagged a brace when she completed the scoring with her second goal with five first half minutes remaining.
DR Congo were much improved after the break and hit the woodwork twice, but so too did Senegal, who ultimately ran out comfortable winners.
With Morocco and Zambia drawing 2-2 in Saturday's opening fixture, Senegal can secure their place in the quarter-finals with victory over Zambia on Wednesday.
Nigeria 3-0 Tunisia
Nigeria proved their quality with a 3-0 win over a young Tunisia side in their opening Women's Africa Cup of Nation clash at Stade Larbi Zaouli on Sunday.
Asisat Oshoala was on target after just four minutes with a powerful header from a Omorinsola Babajide cross.
It took until stoppage time at the end of the first half for the Super Falcons to extend their lead with Rinsola Babajide firing home with a well-struck shot into the back of the Tunisia net.
Tunisia showed resilience and nearly pulled one back when Salma Zemzem struck the crossbar in the closing minutes.
The Carthage Eagles looked to hit back through Salma Zemzem but her fizzed shot came back off the crossbar.
Chinwendu Ihezuo then sealed the result with her goal from close range with six minutes of the match remaining.
The result saw Nigeria top Group B with three points ahead of facing Botswana on Thursday.
Algeria 1-0 Botswana
Algeria got off to a great start in their opening Women's Africa Cup of Nation tie on Sunday with Ghoutia Karchouni on target after just 10 minutes.
But that proved to be the only goal of a highly competitive game at Stade Pere Jego, leaving Algeria holding advantage in Group B ahead of facing Tunisia on Thursday.
Botswana are next in action against Nigeria, also on Thursday.
