More wealthy South Africans are buying homes in Namibia, ranked as one of the safest countries in Africa, for tax benefits and permanent residency.
The Brazilians reportedly spent around R46 million to sign the Argentine from Lanús in January last year under then-coach Rulani Mokwena.
However, Esquivel spent much of his time out on loan and is now strongly linked with a move to Greece.
In total, the 25-year-old managed just 16 appearances, with Cardoso suggesting the challenges were due to a mix of factors — himself, Mokwena, and the player’s own lack of drive.
Speaking ahead of Sundowns’ MTN8 semifinal first leg against Orlando Pirates on Saturday, Cardoso reflected on why the move didn’t work out as expected.
"I had nothing to do with him coming to the club, that was under the previous coach - Rulani Mokwena.
"But Matias is a very good player, and he will succeed wherever he goes. I also didn't give him many opportunities, but at some point, Matias didn't show any perseverance or real willingness to get into the team."
Cardoso said a prime example of a player who fought for his place in the team was fellow South American and forward Arthur Sales.
"Initially, Sales did not show me the promise and the work ethic other people saw in him, but he started to work harder and improve, and his numbers started to increase too.
"At Sundowns, the competition is so tough, and it's difficult for me sometimes to leave these players out."
Sundowns are yet to confirm the exit, but Cardoso added that he felt strongly that Esquivel would be a success at his next destination.
