Pick n Pay beats Checkers, Spar, and Woolworths

The latest PressPulse rankings show that Pick n Pay received much better media coverage than its main competitors, Checkers, Spar, and Woolworths.

PressPulse is an online media-sentiment tracking platform that developed a custom artificial intelligence (AI) sentiment-measuring system.

The system uses sophisticated natural language processing and deep learning for accurate sentiment detection.

It focuses on South African business reporting from top-tier publications and measures companies’ success in achieving positive exposure.

The sentiment ranking is based on the number of positive, neutral, or negative articles and the reach and influence of the publication where they are published.

 

Simply put, the more positive articles a company receives, the better its sentiment ranking. It also accounts for the reach of each article.

Each company is assigned a sentiment score, which reflects its performance. A positive score shows positive exposure, while a negative score shows negative exposure.

The size of the score indicates the impact of the exposure. A big positive score, for example, shows that a company enjoyed highly impactful positive exposure.

Press Pulse’s sentiment analysis for South Africa’s entertainment platforms showed that Pick n Pay topped the rankings with a positive sentiment score of 57.

 

Pick n Pay has had a rollercoaster ride over the last two years. It appointed a new CEO and management team, made board changes, and unveiled a new turnaround strategy.

It has made headlines for closing stores, becoming technically insolvent, raising capital through a rights offer and the Boxer IPO, and becoming the Springboks sponsor.

It endured a great deal of negative press due to its historical challenges. However, in recent months, the sentiment turned more positive.

 

Over the last three months, Pick n Pay received 60 positive articles and only 15 negative articles in South Africa’s top business publications.

This helped Pick n Pay to significantly outperform its biggest competitor, Checkers, which received a positive sentiment score of 18.

The other two major food retailers in South Africa, Spar and Woolworths, had negative sentiment scores.

Although they had more positive than negative articles, their coverage in large and influential publications was negative.
