President Cyril Ramaphosa held a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart, President Vladimir Putin, on Thursday, according to Vincent Magwenya, Spokesperson for the Presidency.
Magwenya says that the call was initiated at the request of President Putin, who sought to update President Ramaphosa on the ongoing peace process with Ukraine and to discuss matters of mutual bilateral interest.
"President Putin expressed his recognition and appreciation for South Africa's involvement in advancing a peace process between Russia and Ukraine. President Ramaphosa welcomed the briefing and expressed South Africa's full support for peace initiatives that will end the war and contribute to a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine."
Magwenya says that the two leaders have also agreed to further their discussions on moving forward the strategic relationship between the two countries.
