Anish Singh Thakur knows the market’s chaos well, he’s lived through the FOMO, the crashes, and the viral hype.
Over the weekend, Sekgodiso finished second at the prestigious Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, recording a personal best of 1:57.16, while Sepeng followed the race from home.
Both Sekgodiso and national 1500m record holder, Tshepo Tshite, are part of the KZN Athletics setup under Sepeng’s guidance.
With a few Diamond League meetings still to come, attention is now turning to preparations for the World Senior Championships in Tokyo, Japan, later this year.
"We really need to applaud the hard work of our athletes and coaches, who have been performing exceptionally well on the global stage.
"It is unfortunate that, due to a lack of resources, Coach Sepeng cannot travel with Prudence. We are, however, considering a few alternatives like sending Sepeng to a few of the Diamond League meetings," outlined the KZNA President.
Mkasi, who was re-elected for a second term last month, told the national broadcaster that KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA) would rather invest in supporting coaches like Samuel Sepeng by covering their travel expenses, including flight tickets, accommodation, and training camps, than waste money on legal battles over leadership disputes in the province.
Mkasi says that while funding all coaches may not be possible due to financial constraints, KwaZulu-Natal Athletics will do its best to support as many as it can.
He assured that they are working on a solution that will benefit both athletes and coaches, aiming to ensure everyone contributes to the overall success of the sport.
"We, as KwaZulu Natal Athletics are considering to assist the coaches, but I'm sure people can apprecaite that every athlete has a coach, so it will be difficult for us to fund each and every single one of the coaches."
Mkasi says KwaZulu-Natal Athletics is working on expanding its pool of athletes representing South Africa and plans to strengthen its support for individual athletes in an effort to retain talent within the province.
