South African ultra-marathon star Gerda Steyn has her sights set on completing the coveted Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Marathon double this year.
Having already claimed her fifth straight Two Oceans Marathon victory in Cape Town in Aprile, Steyn is now aiming to secure her third consecutive – fourth overall – Comrades title the 89km Comrades Down Run is set for this Sunday.
She believes she’s in strong form to complete the double this weekend.
"I have certainly got my eyes on the Two Oceans and Comrades double this year – it has been my goal from the start of the year, and it's what I've been training for, so yes, that is 100 percent the goal," Steyn told SABC Sport.
The 35-year-old, who also claimed victory at the Pirates Half-Marathon in Johannesburg earlier this year, told the national broadcaster she is pleased with her preparations as she heads into this weekend’s race.
"So far all my preparations towards the Comrades Marathon have been going well, I'm happy with the training that I've done, I'm happy with the form I'm in, and really excited for [the race]," she added.
"After my Two Oceans victory back in April, I've just been completely focussed on being ready and prepared for the Comrades, it feels good knowing I've got some experience from previous years, knowing what to do in training, so I don't tend to change much.
"I know what has worked for me in the past, so I try to replicate that year on year, and also build on that year on year, so that's what I've been fully focussed on since the Two Oceans."
