Capitec CEO donates R22 million in shares to an interesting company

Capitec chief executive Gerrie Fourie donated R22.5 million in the bank’s shares to Rooom, a company owned by Micke de Villiers (nee Fourie).

On 5 June 2025, Capitec announced that Fourie donated 6,522 shares valued at R3,446.96 each to Rooom (Pty) Ltd through an on-market transaction.

Rooom was registered 8 years ago, on 1 December 2017, with a focus on quick and affordable interior redesigns. Micke de Villiers is the only director.

Rooom, which is also focused on interior design, states that they do things a little differently with a touch of elegance and a lot of creative thinking.

“Whether it’s your home or a branded space, we strive to design from concept to completion,” the company’s website states.

Roooom offers concepts and design, technical drawings, finish specifications, procurement, project management, and styling.

The company has been inactive on social media for four years, and it is unclear whether it is still operational. The last post was in September 2020.

Micke is Gerrie Fourie’s only child and is also linked to the Stellenbosch-based interior design studio’s Rumour Has It and Design In A Box.

She worked for Rumour Has It as a business developer and designer from November 2016 to March 2020, before moving to Roooom as a business owner.

“With a keen understanding of proportion, texture and spatial planning, I strive to create a dynamic space that captures my client’s personality and lifestyle,” she said.

“I believe that every part of your home should radiate with warmth and invitation. My passion is to transform your space into a reflection of you.”

In a 2023 interview, Gerrie Fourie said Micke, like him, was a born entrepreneur. She worked for only three years for a salary before starting her own business.

After she learned enough about the interior design business, she opened her own business in the same field.

On 28 March 2025, the Capitec board announced that Gerrie Fourie will retire as chief executive officer on 18 July 2025.

Fourie has been on Capitec’s executive management team for the past 25 years and took over as chief executive in 2014.

Under his leadership, the company transformed from a challenger bank serving 5 million clients in 2014 to South Africa’s leading digital bank, serving over 24 million clients.

“Gerrie has provided exceptional leadership and strategic vision,” said Santie Botha, Chairman of Capitec’s Board.

“He has not only facilitated significant growth and innovation but has also built a strong and diverse leadership team poised to carry the Group into the future.”

His leadership has been instrumental in fostering a culture of resilience, innovation, and growth within the company.

He expanded the executive structure to include divisional executive teams responsible for the personal bank, business bank, insurance company, and strategic initiatives.

This change built a strong senior leadership team enriched with expertise, experience and deep institutional knowledge.

“It has been a privilege to be a part of the Capitec journey since day one, and to lead the company through such extraordinary times over the past 11 and a half years,” he said.

“My passion has always been to build a business that innovates to serve the needs of South Africans, and to help our country grow.”

“I believe that we have achieved that. I remain committed to Capitec and am incredibly proud of our achievements to date.”
